Low-Maintenance Garden Design & Installation in Oceanside, CA

Fresh New Fruit Landscaping completed a low-maintenance garden design and installation project in Oceanside, CA, in June 2025.

Site Conditions

The property had irrigation that needed repair and valve replacement, including a broken sprinkler that was leaking. The lawn was patchy and weedy, thorny bushes had become overgrown along the fence, and old fence material was located along the side of the house. The back yard also needed cleanup.

Problem

The homeowner needed irrigation repair and upgrading, weed removal, bush cleanup, and back-yard debris removal. The homeowner also wanted more privacy along the back and side fences, a retaining wall where the old fence material was located, improved paths, and new planting areas.

What We Did

  • Repaired and upgraded the irrigation system with valve replacement, rewiring, correct-height pop-up sprinklers, high-efficiency emitters, and pressure regulators.

  • Replaced the broken sprinkler, recalibrated the back-yard watering, and installed irrigation for the vine area.

  • Removed weeds, cut back and thinned bushes, added weed block and mulch, and hauled away back-yard debris and trash.

  • Leveled the side-yard areas and built a walkway with flagstone and stabilized decomposed granite. The work included about 300 square feet of flagstone within an area of about 600 square feet, compacted with a plate compactor.

  • Built a small retaining wall using two lengths of wood and rebar, reusing sound old fence wood.

  • Repaired the decomposed granite after rain washed part of it away and improved the walkway with larger flagstone and stabilizer.

  • Installed new sod and planted 15 passion fruit plants with amended soil for the vines.

  • Installed 17 lattice panels, each 4 by 8 feet, along the fence line and added privacy screening on the inside of the fence.

  • Added weed block and 2 inches of mulch across the back-yard vine area, using 3 truckloads of mulch.

  • Trimmed 3 carrotwood trees and planted a new bed with low-water plants in 1-gallon sizes.

  • Ongoing maintenance has included weeding, pulling mulch back from plant stems, cutting back bushes and vines, and replacing a sprinkler.

Result

The weedy lawn was replaced with new sod, and the property received decomposed granite and flagstone paths, new planting areas, vine support, and added privacy screening. The homeowner was taught how to care for the plants and is very happy with the results. More work is being planned.
