Fresh New Fruit Landscaping completed a hillside garden design and installation in Encinitas, CA, in February 2023.
Site Conditions
The site was a backyard hillside. Water was seeping into the yard from homes above, creating wet areas on the slope, while other areas stayed dry unless watered. Access to trees on the slope was also a concern.
Problem
The backyard hill needed planting, but its changing moisture conditions made plant selection and irrigation important. Two earlier trees near the bottom fence had died. Terracing was considered but judged too expensive.
What We Did
Fresh New Fruit Landscaping cleared the planting areas and planted over 50 plant varieties on the hillside. Crape myrtles were planted along the top of the hill, with peach, lemon, lime, mango, and nectarine trees, berries, riparian plants in the wet areas, coprosma including mirror plant, aloe, agave, sage, and lavender. The team also built a river-rock retaining wall, installed the lawn below the slope, added drip irrigation lines, and laid weed fabric and mulch.
Materials and plantings included:
River rock
Drip irrigation
Weed fabric
Mulch
Lawn
Crape myrtles
Fruit trees
Berries
Riparian plants
Coprosma
Result
Everything turned out well, and the plantings were successful. Over 50 plant varieties were planted.
