Plants

There are many types of plants that will do well in San Diego with ease. Some are easy and some are challenging.

Low maintenance plants

By far the most requested recent type of plants are plants that need only a couple hours of maintenance regularly. These plants grow slow, are expensive, and need little water. There are very few flowering and fruiting plants that share these qualities.

Flowering plants

In general, all plants are flowering plants, but this category is in general desired/cutting perennial flowers. Flowering plants take more water and maintenance than low maintenance plants. These are the most grown plants by local nurseries, so these plants are the least expensive to buy.

Tropical plants

Everyone’s favorite as long as water is free. Tropical plants have the biggest flowers, showiest foliage, and sweetest fruits. Tropical plants aren’t called for very much any more, but their use should be encouraged. Water never needs to be overused or wasted. For example a delicious fruit tree pays you in fruit for your water usage.

Fruiting plants

Edible plants are definitely our first choice. There are so many food plants that we don’t use, as Americans. We need to diversify our diet faster than popular supermarkets allow us to for our community health. The only way to produce chemical free food on our tables is growing it ourselves.

“The most important part of your job is the soil. You need the right amount of organic material, the correct drainage, and the right sun/water. With this the longevity of your garden is ensured.”

— Jeremy Olin
